Praying Like Paul for Others

Think about (meditate) on the wonderful blessing Paul wrote to the Colossian Christians. They will transform your life. And pray them for others.

When Paul heard about the Colossian Christians’ faith in Jesus Christ and their loved for each other, he reminded them of the wonderful things that awaited them in heaven. The gospel had been preached to them and they loved each other because the Holy Spirit dwelled in them.

Paul constantly prayed that they would (1) be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. (2) they would walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, (3) please Him in all respects. And he prayed (4) they would bear fruit in every good work.

If we want the same blessing must always be increasing in the knowledge of God. Then we will be strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so we will be steadfast, patient and joyfully give thanks to the Father, who qualified all true believers to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. For the Father rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Thank you, Father, for giving me the gift of salvation by revealing Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. Thank you that You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, indwell me. Keep this blessed knowledge front and center in my mind. Thank for forgiving all my sins, those done in the past and those I still stumble into every day. And glorious good news is His blood covers all those I have done and those I will do the rest of my life. It is such a relief to know “the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.” Thank you, Lord God!

I pray you will fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. I realize You do this when I read, study and think about Your Word that we call the Bible. Create a hunger and thirst for the Bible because it is real food for my soul. Reading and studying it affects every part of my life. I am patient with my family, friends and co-workers because You are patient. And when you are filling my life it overflows with your characteristics.

Paul described the fruit of the Holy Spirit as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” We have these qualities in our selves until we are aggravated, irritated, angry, jealous, and all the other basic human sins! But be glad because you don’t have to live with nasty human nature in control! Confess you sins and the Lord will be glad to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness! Then ask Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit. And believe that He answered you prayer.

“Devote yourself to prayer,” was Paul’s instructions to the Colossian Christians. And you know that this is meant for us today. “Devote” means to be courageously persistent in our prayers for family, friends and neighbors., and even enemies.

And “be alert” in your prayers. Don’t wait for a special time or place. Prayer wherever you are and whatever you are doing when someone comes to mind that needs prayer, or any need of your own or need of others.

A right attitude is necessary. Pray with an attitude of thanksgiving because you know the Lord hears us when we pray according to His will He answers. Us. And watch for the Lord’s answers. Sometimes there is a delay in receiving our answer, but don’t wait until you see your request. Give thanks that He hears us. Paul says since God hears us we know we have what we have asked. Therefore in advance of seeing your request give thanks.

Also pray that the Lord will open a door for the Word so you may speak forth the mystery of Christ. And ask that you “can make it clear in the way” you “ought to speak.”

Father, I ask that I will not cease “to pray that I may be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that I will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please You in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthen me with all power according to Your glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience, joyously giving thanks to You, who has qualified me to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Praise Father, that you rescued me from the domain of darkness, and transferred me to the kingdom of Your beloved Son, in who I have redemption, the forgiveness of my sins.” (Colossians 1:10)
