My major in FSU was music education. Four years of musical study shaped my life as a musician and singer. I love to sing in our church choir, but quit singing in the "music world" because of the jealousy and competitiveness of musicians who were promoting themselves. The "one-upmanship" in the last musical I was in was so bad I prayed, "Lord, if you will let me live until this opera is over I will never put my foot back in this place again." You may not have any musical training since grammar school, but that doesn't matter. God gave you the voice you have, so "Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell the world how wonderful He is" (Psalm 66:1). "Sing to the Lord and be not silent" is a command. Many verses in the Bible tell us to sing to the Lord. If you can't sing well "make a joyful noise!" Don't worry about how well you sing. God is pleased with your effort to exalt Him in song. Pray that songs of praise will fill your mind and mouth. One song of praise always sung in church is "Praise God from whom all blessing flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost." That is a good beginning. Fill your day with songs of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. There are as many types of music as there are people. The Lord God made everyone different so your personal taste in music doesn't matter to Him. The command is: "sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Memory Verse: "Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is" (Ephesians 5:17) Prayer: Father God, you know I need to obey the instructions "speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs" as Paul instructed in Ephesians. But I need help to do it. Please fill my mind and heart with songs of praise to you, and instruct me in what your will is for my life. Amen |
